This is a vivid memoir about profound sisterhood, and about the grief and disorientation of losing that deep relationship. Davye Shelley describes childhood's connections - Susan was the older, by five years - and how their connections grew into a deep mutual appreciation of aesthetics, human values, and one another. During the diagnosis and treatment efforts before Susan's death, she and Susan's friends and sons grapple with medical turmoil and the foreknowledge of grief, which arrives as expected, bringing its terrible sense of loss and disorientation. Every word of this book rings true. Davye gives us her greatest gift in the last pages, written at their shared summer home in Maine. She describes in lyrical prose how the peace and beauty of nature bring her comfort and the beginning of healing. If you've known this kind of loss, you'll recognize what she's saying. If not yet, this book is a comforting signpost for an inevitable time ahead.
