Saving souls is not for the weak of heart.

When twelve-year-old Molly Carmichael goes missing en route to her best friend's birthday party, DS Lasser fears the worst. Then a body is found dumped on a bleak, snow-covered lane and those fears are realised. Now, another girl has been snatched from the roadside and Lasser knows that if they don't find her, and quick, then the madman will claim his second victim.
Meanwhile, local man, Robert Bush, becomes the focus of a witch-hunt with only his friend Jerry Morse and local reporter, Michael Brewster, on his side. But Brewster has an ulterior motive and he sees Bush as a stepping stone back to the big time, an inside scoop that will be the envy of his colleagues.
With all the hatred, violence and confusion spiralling around him, Lasser struggles to see through the fog and follow the clues. Clues that will lead him beyond the threshold of sanity.

This is my second DS Lasser experience.
I like this character, the interactions with the other characters, and the nice pacing of the story.
The story itself is really well crafted, interesting, surprising, and satisfying upon completion.
During my first Lasser book, the myriad editing errors detracted from my "total immersion" experience, like speed bumps that are just a little too tall. Also, the wild placing of commas (or lack where I think they would be justified) also took quite a bit away from the experience.
But - I enjoyed the story so much I grabbed another in the series. This author knows how to keep readers returning, despite the "speed bumps."
In fact, by this time, I actually consider the errors as part of the story. The presentation faintly resembles stream of consciousness story telling, but with a well designed structure that keeps the reader moving forward. Lovely!
And yes, I laughed out loud when I came to "profit of doom"...

Riven DS Lasser Seven A compelling DS Lasser mystery The DS Lasser Series Book 7 edition by Robin Roughley Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

Dare I say a gut ripping, soul despairing, well drafted, well conceived, walk on the wild side? It is not uplifting but does not keep you in despair. The book is wonderful.
Robin Roughley
Book 7.
RIVEN.
The 7th book in this series & like the previous 6 books it is fantastic.
It all kicks off when Molly a 12 year old goes missing after heading to her friends birthday party. When a body is found Lasser fears the worst. Lasser is having a difficult time just now with his private life not panning out how he would like it to. This book goes along at a good pace from start to finish. Can they catch this maniac before more bodies turn up ?.
Will Lasser sort the problems with himself & Medea out or not. Loved this book as I am sure everyone that reads it will.
Very highly recommended.
5* 06 September 2015.
Roughley is no doubt a very talented author. His thrillers are fast~paced, intense and exciting. However, I was sorry to see him fall into writing one of the plethora of "crazy Christian genre" stories....yawn. Also, this book was loaded with profanity. I'd also like to see Lasser have some happiness instead of being so depressed. And let Barrister retire. What a miserable old coot. I'm hoping to see Odetta and Lasser fall in love! Maybe some light in all the darkness.
I love Lasser. A down to earth bloke with his personal life in a mess and tenacious in his work. A young girl has gone missing and when she is found dead, strange and unusual things start happening to her family and that of the friend she was with when taken. As ever Robin’s descriptions and attention to detail take you right into the heart of the action along with the emotions of those involved. Lasser is very much his own man and whilst he gets on well with his colleagues most of the time, he is a thinker as well as a do-er. Riven is “split or tear apart violently”. This is not the victims, but the families affected. A well chosen, carefully thought out title. This is a brilliant series although they stand well alone other than the Lasser background/personal life which is a continuing thread. Then again- why miss out on the others? Another highly enjoyable read. Thank you Robin!
Love this series!
Have read seven so far, and the progressive actions of the main characters is losing my interest. But, time will tell, and I would recommend these stories.
4 and 3/4 stars. When a young girl goes missing and her body turns up on a stack of old tires in the snow and freezing weather, we have the beginning of a new Lasser/Bannister story. With no clues to work with, the case becomes frustrating. The weather plays a big part in this story - the freezing roads and snow. DS Lasser is distracted by his difficult relationship with his girlfriend, Medea. Odette, Lasser's new partner, plays a bigger part in this story. too. Well-written and suspenseful, this story at first put me off a little - the evildoer was a "god botherer" as the British call them. But getting past that, it was a very good story about loss, drama and the lengths we go to protect our children. Whether the threat is real or imagined, parents fight for their children's innocence.

The reason for the 4 and 3/4 stars is that I wanted to know how Steven Carmichael turned out. And what happened to the father of the murdered girl? But these are minor things.

All in all, this is another very good entry by Mr. Roughley into the mystery genre. I recommend it highly to anyone who loves these kinds of books.
